Obtaining an instrument Rating (Restricted) IRR, allows you to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) except:
• In class A airspace
• When taking off and landing in flight visibility below cloud is less than 1500 metres.
This rating makes flying in the UK less restrictive, helping you build confidence and improve your piloting skills.
Ground School and Theory Exam.
The first step is to complete Ground School training to gain a solid understanding of what is required for the IRR rating. You must pass the theory exam before commencing the flight training.
• Theory Training requirements: minimum of 20 hours
• Theory Exam: 25 multiple-choice questions
• Exam is valid for 21 months for the issue of the rating
• And 12 months in which to take the flight test.
• The IRR is a national rating, meaning it can only be endorsed onto a UK-issued aeroplane licence.
• It cannot be added to a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence. (LAPL) – You must hold a PPL(A) or higher.
• The IR(R) may not be used in foreign airspace unless permission is granted by that country’s appropriate authority.
• Training outside the UK is permitted, but it must be conducted by a UK CAA approved organisation with a qualified instructor.
